Enhancing Workplace Safety with Tecbond Spray Adhesives

Most adhesives are designed to be out of sight, out of mind, post-use. However, their impact on safety can stick around much longer.

Conventional spray adhesives have long posed health and safety challenges due to their high solvent content and release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These airborne chemicals can present a significant threat to employee health and the environment, often requiring significant investments in PPE and ventilation equipment.

Power Adhesives’ sprayable hot melt range offers a safer, smarter solution. These hot melt adhesives eliminate the threat from VOCs and transform workplace safety standards in composite manufacturing.

What are VOCs?

VOCs are organic gaseous compounds at room temperature, that are commonly emitted from many products such as paints, pesticides, building materials and furnishings. Exposure to VOCs can have both short- and long-term negative health effects, ranging from respiratory irritation, dizziness, or headaches, through to more serious health issues, including cancer or organ damage. What’s more, VOCs can combine with other airborne pollutants to form ground-level ozone. This is a primary component of harmful smog that can damage the environment.

How are VOCs linked to spray can adhesives?

Spray can adhesives typically contain solvents that serve to thin the adhesive so that it can be applied – in fact, up to 85% of these formulations may be composed of solvents that flash off after they have been sprayed. These solvents release VOCs into the atmosphere alongside other atomised particles that may be hazardous to users and the environment alike.

Tecbond Spray Adhesives: The solvent-free solution

Tecbond spray adhesives are engineered as direct replacements for solvent-based formulations, without the hazardous downsides. Unlike conventional products, Tecbond hot melts boast 100% solid content, meaning every gram dispensed is adhesive, and they’re safe to handle, unlike their solvent-based counterparts.

Because Tecbond spray adhesives do not release VOCs or atomised particles, there’s no need for respiratory protective equipment or costly air filtration systems in production areas. As a result, they can better protect workers from respiratory irritation and long-term health risks, as well as reducing ongoing operational costs.

Performance without compromise

This is not to mention the performance benefits that Tecbond spray adhesives offer over other sprayable adhesives. Boasting near-instant tack, they streamline manufacturing by eliminating the need for clamping, while their rapid setting speeds mean bonded materials can move through the production line almost immediately, increasing productivity and output.

In many cases, Tecbond sprayable adhesives offer repositionability without sacrificing tack, granting peace of mind over positioning accuracy and alignment.

A safer, more effective choice

Switching to Tecbond spray adhesives means investing in a safer, more eco-conscious future for your workforce and your business. By eliminating hazardous airborne substances, you can protect your team, lower operational costs, and potentially minimise your environmental footprint – all while benefitting from optimal adhesive performance.

Why brands are switching to biodegradable adhesives

As sustainability shifts from a buzzword to a business imperative in the packaging industry, brands are increasingly scrutinising every part of their supply chains – right down to the adhesives holding their packaging together.

For forward-thinking companies, biodegradable hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR are no longer alternatives or nice-to-haves. These formulations are becoming essential tools for meeting environmental targets and consumer expectations. For converters seeking to retain a competitive edge in an increasingly eco-conscious market, understanding why this switch is being made is more important than ever.

Aligning with consumer values

Today’s shoppers don’t just buy products – they buy values. A 2025 surge in eco-conscious consumerism has made biodegradable packaging a market differentiator, with research suggesting people may pay nearly 10% more for responsibly sourced and manufactured products.

Brands using adhesives like Tecbond 214B signal meticulous attention to sustainability, fostering loyalty among environmentally aware demographics. This is particularly crucial for sectors like food, cosmetics, and FMCG, where packaging often serves as the first touchpoint with customers. By ensuring every component, including the adhesive, aligns with their ethical positioning, brands can avoid accusations of greenwashing and build genuine trust.

Reducing microplastic pollution

Microplastics are quickly growing as an environmental issue of concern across industries. These microscopic polymer fragments can disrupt ecosystems by affecting soil properties and the food web, potentially posing a threat to health when consumed.

When conventional adhesives degrade, they often leave behind microplastics and other harmful chemicals. In contrast, biodegradable adhesives like Tecbond 214B and 110B-PR break down naturally into organic matter. Unlike other adhesives they leave no harmful residues, making them a powerful tool for brands looking to prove their commitment to the environment.

Streamlining waste processing

Conventional adhesives can also present a problem to recycling infrastructure, which require complex, expensive separation processes to ensure efficient material reprocessing.

Biodegradable adhesives simplify this equation. Compatible with existing recycling systems, they allow fibre-based packaging to be processed efficiently without contaminating recycled materials. For compostable packaging, Tecbond products meet stringent biodegradability standards, ensuring adhesives won’t undermine compostability claims. This dual functionality reduces landfill dependency and aligns with circular economy principles – a critical advantage as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees rise globally.

Technological advancements driving adoption

Today’s biodegradable adhesive formulations have no trade-off between functionality and sustainability. Tecbond 214B matches the bond strength and setting speed of many conventional packaging hot melt alternatives, while 110B-PR’s low viscosity enables precise application without clogging machinery. These advancements mean manufacturers can switch without retrofitting equipment – a cost-saving benefit that accelerates ROI. Moreover, certifications like EN13432 provide assurance that these adhesives perform as promised in industrial and home composting environments.

How long do hot melt adhesives last?

With their versatility, strength, and ease of application, hot melt adhesives like Tecbond offer long-lasting bonds for a range of industries – but just how long do they last? From ensuring ideal environmental conditions in storage and application, to getting the most out of formulations that are designed to break down over time, understanding the lifespan of hot melt adhesives is key to maximising their performance.

Practical longevity of hot melt adhesives

Hot melt adhesives are thermoplastics that bond by cooling and solidifying. This results in strong, long-lasting connections, with Tecbond formulations offering permanent bonds under ideal conditions.

However, exposure to certain conditions may shorten the practical lifespans of many hot melt adhesive formulations, with environmental conditions among the most influential factors. Temperature extremes and UV exposure can degrade adhesives and their bonds, with high temperatures causing softening or melting, low temperatures potentially leading to brittleness or cracking, and UV exposure breaking down the adhesives internal polymers, reducing strength.

Substrates play another vital role in determining bond strength and durability. Porous materials generally provide better adhesion than non-porous materials like metal or plastic, so adhesives must be properly matched to the specific substrate requirements.

What is the shelf life of hot melt adhesives?

Environmental conditions can have a significant impact on the longevity of hot melt adhesives during storage. As these products are solid at room temperature, they last significantly longer than many other types of adhesives when stored correctly, with many lasting near-indefinitely under ideal conditions.

To maximise this shelf life, adhesives should be stored in cool, dry places away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keeping the adhesives in their original packaging can also help to maintain adhesive quality by reducing exposure to UV light and moisture.

How long do biodegradable hot melt adhesives last?

Biodegradable hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 214B and 110B-PR are quickly gaining traction as more eco-conscious alternatives to conventional formulations. These products offer comparable performance to other hot melt adhesives while breaking down naturally over time. However, this also means that their lifespan in storage and application may differ.

The biodegradation process begins upon exposure to oxygen, heat, and UV light. This kick-starts an irreversible process that gradually degrades the adhesive’s long-chain polymers, ensuring robust bonds for most applications while still supporting a more circular approach to packaging design.

The exact length of this process can vary depending on the degree of exposure – however, it is recommended to keep the adhesive in its original packaging, away from direct sunlight and below 25°C. Under these conditions, these products can be safely stored for up to two years from the date of manufacture.

Selecting the right adhesive for long-lasting durability

Choosing the right hot melt adhesive involves considering both application requirements and environmental factors:

  • Assess environmental conditions: For high-temperature environments, select adhesives with high heat-resistance such as polyamides.
  • Consider substrate properties: Ensure compatibility with the materials being bonded by selecting adhesives tailored to specific substrates.
  • Evaluate storage needs: If long-term storage is required, prioritise adhesives with extended shelf lives and follow manufacturer recommendations for optimal storage conditions.

Power Adhesives stands out as a leader in hot melt technology by offering superior formulations that cater to diverse industrial needs. With advanced solutions designed for durability and environmental responsibility, Power Adhesives ensures reliable performance across applications while supporting sustainable practices.

Unsticking packaging’s waste problem with biodegradable adhesives

Sticky situations often require innovative solutions – and with the growing demand for eco-conscious packaging, one of the stickiest problems facing converters is adhesive itself.

Demand for packaging is growing, and with this growth comes the problem of managing packaging waste. Adhesives form a key part of this challenge, and biodegradable hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR are leading the way towards overcoming it.

How is sustainability reshaping the packaging industry?

It’s no secret that in the world of packaging, sustainability has fast become a business imperative. Brands and consumers alike expect converters to do more on the environment, pushing converters to innovate and adapt.

Fibre-based packaging has emerged as a shining example of this shift and offers significant environmental benefits in terms of renewability, ease of recycling, and lower Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fees. By 2034, the global packaging industry will be worth almost $1.8 trillion, with fibre-based packaging making up the largest proportion of this.  Almost 40% of total packaging material consumption was fibre-based in 2023 – a figure set to climb steadily in the year ahead.

Why are biodegradable adhesives a game-changer?

The surge in fibre-based packaging production means more waste to manage post-use. Sustainable design must account for every detail of this packaging, including adhesives.

Conventional adhesives can complicate recycling processes by requiring separation, which adds extra layers to waste management. Worse still, in the unfortunate situation that packaging escapes recycling streams and decomposes in the environment, traditional adhesives can release microplastics and harmful substances into the surrounding area.

Biodegradable adhesives like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR offer a transformative solution. These formulations break down completely under common natural conditions, leaving behind only water, carbon dioxide, and organic matter that microorganisms can digest. This lowers microplastic pollution in landfills or waterways while reducing overall environmental impact.

The added advantages of biodegradable adhesives

Switching to biodegradable hot melt adhesives doesn’t just benefit the planet – it also offers tangible benefits:

Enhanced brand appeal: As consumers increasingly prioritise eco-conscious products, biodegradable formulations can help converters meet their demands by increasing appeal and potentially cementing brand loyalty.

High performance: Biodegradable Tecbond products provide fast setting times and the same bond strength as conventional hot melt formulations.

Versatility: Tecbond 214B is compatible with a wide range of paper and board substrates, making it ideal for multiple closing and sealing applications.

Process efficiency: Tecbond 110B-PR is designed for low viscosity so it can run through narrow nozzles even when applied at lower temperatures. This enables converters to minimise energy used for sealing and closing, reducing their costs and carbon footprint.

Solid vs Solvent-based adhesives – The Vactac advantage for composite manufacturing

For years, solvent-based spray adhesive technology has helped composite manufacturers with positioning reinforcement layers during vacuum infusion. However, with the safety, performance, and environmental drawbacks of spray adhesives becoming increasingly clear, Power Adhesives’ Vactac range provides a cutting-edge alternative that is already transforming the industry.

Drawbacks of solvent-based spray adhesives

Although aerosol adhesives are widely used, their downsides are becoming more and more apparent.

As composite manufacturers grapple with challenges relating to waste and efficiency, aerosol adhesives may be holding them back. A large portion aerosol cans comprise of propellant and solvent, with only 20-30% of products typically being actual adhesive material. This means that only a small amount of the product is being used for its intended purpose, resulting in significant waste and inefficiency.

Solvent-based adhesives also present a risk to health and safety. Traditional aerosol spray adhesives contain potentially hazardous solvents, propellants, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as face masks or air extraction systems, to ensure a safe working environment. This not only adds to operational costs but also complicates the manufacturing process.

What’s more, aerosol adhesives may lead to performance issues with the materials they’re applied to. Used incorrectly, these aerosols can dissolve in polyester and vinylester resin, which creates a mixture of resin/adhesive (SBR/solvent based rubber) which can migrate from where it is applied, accumulate, and cause a dry spot. This accumulation of the dissolved SBR material will inhibit resin flow, leading to compromised structural integrity which can result in delamination.

The Vactac difference

Vactac represents a paradigm shift for vacuum-infused composites. This innovative product is 100% adhesive and offers high performance that directly addresses common challenges encountered with other technologies:

  • Cost effectiveness: Vactac means manufacturers essentially pay for pure adhesive – not solvents or propellants.
  • Environmental benefits: Vactac’s VOC and solvent-free formulation perfectly aligns with sustainability targets, helping companies eliminate aerosol emissions.
  • Enhanced safety: Unlike aerosol-based products Vactac is non-hazardous, removing the need for ventilation and additional PPE to create a safer working environment.
  • Uniform and controlled application: Vactac’s unique chemistry leads to improved inter-laminar shear properties and greater composite mechanical performance when compared to aerosol technologies.
  • High instant tack: This adhesive ensures precise positioning without shifting, leading to high-quality results.

Application technology

Alongside the Vactac adhesive system, Power Adhesives has invested in creating a better application process. The company’s new PCB-controlled dispensing system ensures a finer, more uniform adhesive pattern, enhancing interlaminar shear properties and overall mechanical performance when compared to aerosol technologies.

The equipment features internal modifications and improved nozzle and valve designs, resulting in more consistent output and lower maintenance requirements. It can be tailored for both low and high output applications, increasing versatility across different manufacturing scenarios, and is developed for lower production variability. As a result, Vactac’s application technology offers a more practical and cost-effective choice for manufacturers.
