People of Power Adhesives Keith Hampson, Adhesives Operations Director

As we celebrate 50 Years of Innovation at Power Adhesives, we are sitting down and talking with some of our brilliant team as part of our People of Power Adhesives Series.

Fifth up is Keith Hampson, Adhesives Operations Director. Keith joined Power Adhesives in its pre-Power Adhesives name days back in 1986 and was part of the company’s very first production run. During our chat, we discuss his early experiences, the company finding its feet, and his vision for the future.

How did your journey with Power Adhesives begin?

I joined the business in 1986 when it was still called Packaging Aids, a packing company with hot melt adhesives and applicators as part of its portfolio. Back then, we were mainly a distributor, sourcing most adhesives from a joint venture with Beardow & Adams in Milton Keynes, alongside some specialist products from Dexter Hysol in the US.

Then in 1989 an opportunity came up for Power Adhesives to purchase its own manufacturing line from Dexter Hysol, who were looking to shut down their plant in France.

This was an opportunity that we could not ignore, the deal was done. The plant was disassembled and transported back to the UK to a place called Barking in Essex, where we spent months putting it all together, with the help of hundreds of photographs and notes taken during the disassembly. This was the start of some scary but also very exciting times, as we had little or no experience in manufacturing hot melts.

What made you choose to stay with the company for so long?

2026 will be my 40th year, and whenever I’m asked why I stayed so long, I say there are many reasons. I loved going to work in the morning, learning something new every day, being part of a family business, who had become friends and not just work colleagues.

Being there for every part of the exciting journey that brought us to where we are today, not just as a world leader in shaped hotmelt adhesives but in applicators as well.

You worked on the first adhesive production run – a big day. What do you remember about it? What was the product being produced and did it go as smooth as hoped?

It was 1990, and the product was a packaging grade called 342-43, which we still make today some 35 years later. We had help from a Hysol technician from the US for the first two weeks, which was invaluable as we learned the process. That first run was exciting but intense. It wasn’t perfect, we made mistakes, but those early challenges were how we learned and improved.

How did things evolve after that initial run? What came next?

The next year was spent perfecting what we had learnt from every production run completed. Yes, we made mistakes along the way but that’s how we got better, and it wasn’t long before we actually knew what we were doing! We started to understand not only the process, but the adhesives themselves and how each of the formulations has its own unique way of being produced, depending on the viscosity and softening point.

My early years in this new venture were spent learning as much as possible from the people around me at that time, which included the then Production Manager and Plant Manager, who between them had a wealth of knowledge of manufacturing in different sectors. These two were instrumental in the early success of Power Adhesives, but none of this would have been possible without Steve Sweeney (then Technical Director), the eldest son of the Sweeney family, who had left university with a mechanical engineering degree, which would turn out to be invaluable to the business over the coming years.

Steve was the real brains behind the outfit, and in the coming years, had managed to teach himself basic chemistry and the understanding of what goes into not only making, but formulating a good shaped hot melt adhesive. Soon after, he became our acting Chemist. He always used to say, “I know enough about the chemistry to make me dangerous” and would laugh.

Do you have a personal favourite product or innovation from your time at Power Adhesives?

If I was to look back at my almost 40 year journey and had to pick a time or products that had a massive influence on the where we are today, it would be the handheld spray tool and formulations of the spray adhesives, which were a game changer for us and will still have a major part to play the in the continued growth of Power Adhesives.

Where do you see Power Adhesives in the next 5–10 years?

We have come a long way since we installed that first line 1989, and I’m looking forward to the next chapter in the continued growth of Power Adhesives, not just in the UK or Europe but also in America. Although we’ve recently changed ownership, our aim is still the same, to be the world leaders in shaped hot melt adhesives and applicators.

I do feel in the next decade, the adhesives industry will be heavily driven by sustainability, biodegradability and recyclable products, with the manufacturing processes also having to make many changes as we all work towards reducing our carbon footprint.

But if/when these challenges come Power Adhesives way, we will do what we have also done, face them, find a solution and move forward. This is what has gotten us to where we are today, and with the help of the fantastic team of people we have, from the long service, through to the new ones that have joined us, with years of experience in different sectors will help take Power to the next level. For me personally, I think the next level for us to increase sales of our adhesives and applicators in America by 100% over the next 5-10 years.

Bulk adhesives, the driving force in efficient automotive manufacturing

A car is more than just a tool for getting from A to B. Our cars are luxury products that we forge connections with – they are an experience, and a piece of high-end craftsmanship. These next-level machines are the result of next-level manufacturing, but as pressures mount on auto makers for faster production, lower weights, and higher environmental standards, the tools and materials used on the production floor are rapidly evolving.

Among the changes underway in the automotive sector is the growing use of bulk hot melt adhesives, like our Tecbond range, which provide a versatile and robust solution that keeps up with modern requirements while seamlessly integrating into production lines.

What are hot melt adhesives?

Hot melt adhesives are high-performing adhesives designed to set rather than cure. These products are supplied in solid form and melted, through heating, onto the surfaces to be bonded. Once applied, the adhesive rapidly solidifies without needing compression, forming long-lasting bonds within minutes. Bulk hot melt adhesives are designed for high-throughput operations, enabling consistent, scalable deployment across large-scale production environments.

Why choose hot melt adhesives for automotive applications?

One of the main drivers for using hot melt adhesives in the automotive industry is the efficiency they bring to manufacturing and assembly processes. Rather than replacing mechanical fasteners entirely, hot melt adhesives often work alongside them. For example, a process that might require ten fasteners could be reduced to around half when hot melt is used to provide additional bonding.

This complementary approach not only speeds up assembly but also reduces the number of drilling or fixing points, minimising labour and potential material damage. At the same time, adhesives distribute stress evenly across the bonded area, improving structural integrity and ensuring consistent, long-term performance.

Adhesives also offer greater flexibility to enhance the visual appeal of vehicles by reducing the need for unsightly staples or rivets. This grants designers greater control over the vehicle’s aesthetics, and their invisible application enables cleaner, sleeker designs.

Modern adhesives are also incredibly versatile tools designed to work well across a range of materials. Hot melt products can bond well with everything from aluminium to textiles, meaning one adhesive can often be used for multiple applications. This versatility extends to bonding with composite materials, enabling them to be used as a replacement for aerosols and adhesives with long-curing times, facilitating faster production and throughput.

How are hot melt adhesives used in automotive manufacturing?

The versatility of hot melt adhesives makes them ideal for multiple automotive manufacturing applications.

Interior fixings and finishings: Where aesthetic appeal matters most, hot melt adhesives enable the seamless attachment of finishing details to the vehicle’s interior to enhance its appearance. Their high bond strength and clean application reduce or remove the need for additional fasteners.  Because they can help to absorb vibrations and noise, their use also results in a quieter, smoother driving experience.

Oil filter manufacturing: In the hot space around the engine block, adhesives need to be able to withstand high temperatures without degrading. Hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 7785 are proven to withstand temperatures up to 160°C (before softening), ensuring reliable performance for oil filters. They are also highly resistant to oil and other chemicals commonly found in oil filters, providing peace of mind and long-lasting protection.

Body repair: Specific paintless dent repair formulations like Tecbond 246 provide strong temporary bonds that are easily removable after repair to revolutionise how body shops can repair minor dents and damage. These do not damage the paintwork, achieving superior results in a fraction of the time.

Can bulk hot melt adhesives improve sustainability?

The value of bulk adhesives extends beyond the process level. As vehicle manufacturers strive to meet stricter regulations, hot melt adhesives can also support sustainability improvements.

Because hot melt-adhesives are solvent-free, their use does not result in the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This avoids air pollution associated with other kinds of adhesives, protecting workers and creating a safer working environment.

Biodegradable hot melt adhesives – the missing link in more sustainable packaging inserts

While fibre-based inserts, moulded pulp, and recycled board have transformed the sustainability of packaging, conventional adhesives have remained a stubborn obstacle – until now. Biodegradable adhesives like Tecbond 214B are emerging as the crucial bridge that enables strong, fast-setting bonds that keep packaging secure, while still ensuring that every component can safely return to the earth or the recycling stream.

The evolution of packaging inserts

The design of packaging inserts has shifted in recent years in response to rising sustainability requirements. Manufacturers are increasingly prioritising paper, paperboard, and moulded fibre as they seek alignment with environmental requirements. These recyclable and compostable materials maintain high durability and protection while supporting carbon and waste reduction targets, making it easier to keep pace with changing regulatory requirements and consumer expectations around sustainability.

In this landscape, choosing the right material for packaging inserts is critical for balancing product protection with low environmental impact. However, if manufacturers want to take sustainability to the next level, they must consider all elements of their packaging – including the adhesives that hold it together.

Choosing the right adhesives for packaging inserts

When selecting bonding solutions for packaging inserts, several key performance considerations must be made. Fast setting times support high-speed production and minimise assembly bottlenecks, and clean application reduces the risk of overspill or visible residue. This results in a seamless appearance that helps maintain brand presentation.

Compatibility with fibre-based substrates is another key consideration as many packaging inserts are made from materials like paper, cardboard, or moulded fibre. Bond strength and durability are also essential to maintain integrity during handling, shipping, and storage, preventing insert displacement and product damage.

The biodegradable hot melt revolution

Biodegradable hot melt adhesives offer all these benefits and more. Engineered for a minimal environmental impact, formulations like Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR are ideal for use with fibre-based or compostable packaging inserts, as they can break down alongside them without contributing additional waste.

Unlike conventional adhesives, biodegradable formulations are specifically designed to break down naturally in the open environment without leaving behind harmful waste. Traditional adhesives must be separated prior to recycling as their presence would risk contaminating the paper fibres and making them unsuitable for reuse as high-quality packaging. This separation introduces additional complexity and cost, and the skimmed off adhesives will likely either be incinerated or landfilled, resulting in waste or carbon emissions. What’s more, if packaging does escape the recycling stream and ends up in landfill, the adhesives will persist in the environment as the packaging breaks down.

Biodegradable adhesives avoid these problems thanks to their innovative formulation. When packaging with biodegradable adhesives ends up in landfill environments, these adhesives degrade into water and carbon dioxide, when oxygen is present, leaving no microplastics or harmful residues behind. This process begins upon exposure to oxygen, heat, and UV light with no additional treatment required, meaning it’s easy to start creating packaging with a smaller waste footprint.

Designed to perform

Thanks to advances in adhesive formulation, biodegradable adhesives can offer comparable performance to conventional grades. Modern biodegradable adhesives like Tecbond 214B and 110B-PR deliver bond strength and fast setting times equivalent to traditional hot melts, ensuring that packaging inserts remain securely in place throughout the supply chain. These adhesives can be used with a wide range of paper and board inserts, making them suitable for diverse packaging applications without introducing hazardous substances.

The next step in packaging’s evolution

With rising expectations for more sustainable packaging, biodegradable adhesives help brands comply with regulations and appeal to environmentally conscious consumers. By using biodegradable adhesives, pack integrity is preserved during product use, and the packaging remains fully recyclable or compostable at end-of-life, helping brands meet sustainability goals and regulatory requirements without sacrificing performance.

Boosting sustainability efforts in composite manufacturing with Vactac

Sustainability is a central concern in today’s composite manufacturing sector. The drive to reduce emissions and minimise waste is reshaping every stage of production, and in this context, the choice of bonding solutions plays a critical role. High-performance adhesives like Vactac are vital for creating durable bonds as well as achieving sustainability targets and regulatory compliance.

How do bonding solutions affect sustainability in composites manufacturing?

Positioning adhesives play a critical role in composite manufacturing and is key to ensuring composite layers remain in place prior to resin infusion. However, the choice of adhesive can also have far-reaching implications for sustainability.

Conventional bonding methods often come with significant drawbacks for the environment. Many of the traditional positioning adhesive systems only contain around 15-20% adhesive material, with the rest comprising solvents and propellants that evaporate during application. This results in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) being released, which contribute to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as posing a health risk to workers.

Besides their high solvent content and associated emissions, aerosol adhesives can cause resin contamination during vacuum infusion. If not correctly specified, the application of solvent-based adhesives can lead to dry spots which impairs resin flow and ultimately, comprised structural integrity. This not only threatens product quality but also increases the likelihood of waste and rework, further undermining sustainability goals.

How are regulations governing composites manufacturing evolving?

The regulatory landscape around sustainability in composites manufacturing is tightening, with governments and industry bodies introducing stricter controls on emissions, waste management, and worker safety. Manufacturers are under constant regulatory pressure to reduce VOC levels in their factories. They must also provide adequate personal protective equipment. In some cases, air filtration systems are required to safeguard employees from airborne particulates and hazardous fumes. These requirements add complexity and cost, making the search for safer, more environmentally responsible alternatives more urgent.

How does Vactac support more sustainable manufacturing?

Our Vactac range provides the ideal solution to these challenges. Designed with a clear focus on environmental responsibility, Vactac stands apart as a direct replacement for solvent-based sprays, offering a solution that is both environmentally conscious and operationally superior. Unlike aerosols, Vactac is 100% solid content, meaning every gram dispensed is usable adhesive, eliminating the waste associated with solvent evaporation. Stronger bonds, better sleep: Bulk adhesives in the mattress industry

Getting a good night’s sleep starts long before your head hits the pillow. A restful night begins in the factory where a mattress is made, with every layer engineered for comfort and support, and adhesives are a key but often overlooked component in achieving this.

For manufacturers, the choice of adhesive can make all the difference between a mattress that stands the test of time and one that fails to deliver. In a market increasingly driven by quality, getting adhesive selection right is crucial for ensuring high quality, streamlining production and ultimately, better sleep for customers.

Hidden challenges of mattress assembly

Manufacturing mattresses is a complex operation. Every mattress is composed of multiple materials including foams, fabrics, spring units, and more. Each of these materials has its own bonding requirements, and conventional adhesives have historically faced challenges when used for bonding them.

Water-based adhesives, for example, can lead to moisture being trapped within the mattress, resulting in a higher risk of mould growth. Solvent-based adhesives, while effective, emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that pose health risks to workers and require costly ventilation and safety measures.

Production speed presents another critical concern. In a competitive industry, slow-acting adhesives that slow the assembly line can quickly result in bottlenecks. Water- and solvent-based adhesives often need lengthy drying or curing times that make it difficult to keep up with demand or respond to custom order requests. Additionally, the growing complexity of modern mattresses, with intricate layers and advanced materials, demands adhesives that can bond with a wide range of substrates quickly and reliably.

The bulk hot melt solution

Our bulk hot melt adhesives are engineered to address these very challenges. Unlike traditional adhesives, hot melts are solids at room temperature and become liquid when heated, enabling fast, precise application and near-instant setting. This rapid setting to a solid state also removes the risk of mould formation. As a result, bonded components can be moved along the production line almost immediately, increasing throughput and reducing production costs.

This technology has the added benefit of a VOC-free formulation. Our adhesives release no harmful contaminants during application, eliminating the need for personal protective equipment or extraction systems and creating a safer, more pleasant working environment.

Stronger bonds

With strength and reliability being non-negotiable in mattress assembly, our bulk hot melt adhesives offer the ideal solution, standing up to repeated compression to ensure long-lasting performance. Sprayable solutions like Tecbond 425-PL offer high strength and flexibility even under extreme tension and set with faster cooling and reduced material damage. As a result, whether you are bonding foam to foam or attaching fabrics and non-wovens, our adhesives deliver consistent, durable results.

Better adhesives, better mattresses

The quality of a mattress is only as strong as the bonds that hold it together. With Power Adhesives’ bulk hot melt technology, manufacturers can overcome traditional barriers to deliver mattresses that excel and rest easy knowing that they are delivering a better sleep for everyone.

Breaking down the myths: Are biodegradable adhesives really effective?

It’s time to address the myths – just how do biodegradable hot melt adhesives like Tecbond 214B stack up against traditional formulations?

With brands and their manufacturers facing growing pressure to reduce their environmental impact, the demand for more sustainable packaging solutions has never been higher. However, several persistent myths remain – particularly the idea that ‘biodegradable’ means sacrificing performance. Let’s set the record straight and examine how innovations like Tecbond 214B are debunking these misconceptions.

Myth: Biodegradable adhesives don’t perform like conventional ones

One of the most common myths around biodegradable hot melt adhesives is that their formulation makes them inherently weaker or less reliable than traditional hot melts. However, with today’s advanced formulations, this simply is no longer the case.

Tecbond 214B for example is based on the best-selling Tecbond 214 grade and is engineered to match the performance of conventional hot melt adhesives. It delivers strong, reliable bonds on a wide variety of paper and cardboard substrates, making it ideal for a vast range of packaging applications. The high tack and fast setting speed means you can seal more cartons in less time, and with no need for extended holding or clamping periods after compression.

As a result, Tecbond 214B offers a viable replacement for other adhesives as well as staples and tapes in cardboard bonding, providing a low cost per closure and supporting high volume manufacturing.

You don’t just have to take our word for it – certified to ASTM D6400, EN13432, ASTM D6954 and ASTM D6866 standards, Tecbond 214B has been rigorously tested to ensure it retains the adhesive properties of other hot melt adhesives while still being fully biodegradable.

Myth: Switching to biodegradable adhesives requires major equipment upgrades

Another widespread belief is that switching to biodegradable adhesives requires costly new equipment or disruptive changes to production lines. In reality, hot melts like Tecbond 214B are designed for easy integration and are available in all standard stick formats. This product is also designed to be compatible with existing Tec glue guns and bulk hot melt systems without needing special modifications. This means you can transition to a more sustainable adhesive solution without the expense or downtime of retooling your operations.

Myth: Biodegradable adhesives have no effect on a product’s environmental impact

Some sceptics argue that adhesives form such a small part of packaging that switching to biodegradable formulations makes no or little difference to sustainability. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. If traditional adhesives escape recycling streams they can leave behind microplastics and residues that persist in the environment.

In contrast, Tecbond 214B is formulated with 45% bio-based, sustainably sourced materials and breaks down naturally in the presence of oxygen, UV light, and heat – leaving behind only non-harmful products. This helps to reduce waste and helps to ensure that adhesives don’t undermine the sustainability of packaging.

Stick to the facts

Today’s advanced adhesives mean the need for trade-offs between sustainability and performance is over. Biodegradable hot melt formulations like Tecbond 214B offer the same strength, speed, and reliability as traditional formulations with a minimal environmental impact. By making the switch, you gain access to a powerful tool for meeting your sustainability goals – so what are you waiting for?
