How hot melts have changed the game in the furniture production industry

Sprayable hot melts have been around for nearly 20 years, and in that time, they’ve established themselves as a key component in the manufacture of many everyday products.

In the furniture industry for example, as production demands have increased and designs have evolved, manufacturers have turned to these advanced adhesive technologies to improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance product quality. From foam bonding to upholstery fixing, Tecbond sprayable hot melts play a vital role in every stage of production.

In this blog, we’ll explore some of the key applications where Tecbond sprayable hot melts have made a significant difference.

Foam-to-Foam bonding

In any piece of furniture that includes cushioning, there will be some form of high-density foam or foam structure designed to provide comfort and support, with enough integrity to hold its shape after a period of use.

These foam pieces can be difficult to bond due to their porous makeup and resistance to compression. In many circumstances, manufacturers would have used water-based adhesives due to the very strong bonds they deliver once fully cured. However, water-based adhesives introduce some unwanted risks that are difficult to tackle. Alongside their very long curing time, if the water doesn’t evaporate properly, there’s a risk of mould growth which can then spread to other parts of the furniture.

Tecbond hot melts on the other hand are not only compromised of 100% solid content, with no evaporation or curing taking place, but they also have a high instant tack and fast setting speeds. Once an initial bond is made, it takes only a few minutes for the bond to be strong enough to enable movement through the production line, speeding up the overall production process.

Foam-to-Structure bonding

Following foam-to-foam bonding, many manufacturers will use the same hot melts to bond the finished cushioning to the structural component that makes up the frame of the furniture. This includes seat bottoms, back supports, and even backing boards for decorative pieces or acoustic paneling.

As with the foam-to-foam bonds, Tecbond spray adhesive will form a final bond much faster than a water or solvent-based alternative. Using the same adhesive for all stages of the process also cuts down on production costs and materials, without compromising on performance.

Alongside wood, Tecbond spray adhesives will also effectively bond foam pieces to almost any building material including metal and most plastics (including polypropylene and polyethylene).

Upholstery Fabrics

Due to their excellent coverage and zero risk of mould growth, hot melts continue to be a common alternative for bonding upholstery fabrics to the finished foam pieces. They also act as a temporary bond on wooden framing prior to stapling or pinning.

Their high initial tack means that manufacturers can rely on a strong temporary bond while they prepare to finish securing the fabric with the necessary fastener.

Our sprayable hot melts have been used to bond fabrics in sofas, armchairs, office seating, and even wheelchairs.

Decorative Laminates

Outside of traditional veneer coverings, a lot of furniture manufacturers have turned to high pressure laminates (HPLs) to provide an easier and more robust alternative for decorative surface covering over unsightly wood substrates such as MDF, particleboard and plywood.

Primarily bonded with a solvent-based contact adhesive, this method isn’t cost-effective as the bonding process requires both surfaces to be covered to achieve a strong bond. With solvent-based adhesives being more than 60% solvent in most cases, the low initial cost of the adhesive is negated by frequency of purchase.

Alongside this, there is a significant disposal cost that comes with the empty canisters. As they contain traces of hazardous material, they require special disposal methods to avoid air pollution and human inhalation, which comes at a cost.

Tecbond spray adhesives are the ideal alternative thanks to their VOC-free composition and high tack, which reduces the amount of adhesive needed to form a strong bond. In many circumstances, users would apply the hot melt to the wooden surface only and then apply the HPL. As 100% of the product is used in the application process, there’s no waste product and no associated disposal costs.

The Overarching Benefits

Tecbond sprayable hot melts offer a more cost-effective, user-friendly and agile alternative to other commonly used products on the market.

Non-toxic and easy to handle they can be used without the need for respiratory PPE or air extraction equipment in factories, while their rapid setting speeds when compared to solvent and water-based options mean products move through the production line faster, increasing production efficiency.

Power Adhesives launches cost-effective and reliable carton closing hot melt adhesive

Power Adhesives has added a brand-new packaging grade to its Tecbond range of hot melts, engineered to help businesses reduce their costs without compromising on performance or speed.

Tecbond 114 has been developed for use on uncoated cardboard, making it ideal for carton closing, tray assembly and for use with packaging inserts.

Developed by Power Adhesives based on customer feedback, cost-effective Tecbond 114 enables businesses to reduce the cost per carton closure. Its fast setting speed and strong initial bond help manufacturers to reduce adhesive usage per box, while increasing production efficiency.

Available in 12mm, 15mm and 43mm shaped formats, Tecbond 114 delivers best results when used with the Tec range of hot melt applicators.

Alex Zulewski, Commercial Director commented: “Tecbond 114 is a great addition to our range of hot melts for packaging. As a customer-focused manufacturer, we’ve listened to the market and created a great cost-effective option, while still delivering strength and performance.

“We’re proud to be able to offer such a comprehensive range that caters for all customers, including good quality products that are keenly priced for the packaging market, next to cutting edge biodegradable hot melts for packaging.”

Power Adhesives recently expanded its biodegradable range of hot melts, introducing three new adhesives aimed primarily at packaging. Tecbond 902B-PL, Tecbond 351B-PR and Tecbond 351B-PR were launched in January, which sit alongside original biodegradable formulations Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR.

All Tecbond biodegradable grades comply with EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, ensuring they biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions without leaving microplastics or harmful residues. The full range of grades has also achieved CHIRA assessment approval, confirming that they are benign within paper recycling streams and have no adverse effects on the pulping or recovery process.

All products are suitable for use in high-speed packaging environments and precision manufacturing, offering reliable adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.

Tecbond 114 is the latest hot melt to be added to the Tecbond packaging range, offering customers a comprehensive choice of adhesives to suit their needs.

PPWR & Biodegradable Adhesives – A comprehensive Q&A

Q1: What is the PPWR and why does it matter for adhesives?

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will replace the current Packaging Directive and set binding, harmonised rules across all Member States. From 2030, all packaging must be designed for recycling.

This includes every component, right down to the adhesive. Using a non-compliant adhesive can compromise recyclability or compostability claims, risking market access, fines, or reputational damage.

Q2: Can adhesives really stop my packaging from being recyclable or compostable?

Yes. Even if the main substrate is recyclable or compostable, incompatible adhesives can cause contamination in recycling streams, clog sorting and pulping equipment, or prevent composting certification.

A small percentage of non-compliant adhesive can invalidate the whole claim.

Q3: What does EN 13432 certification mean for adhesives?

EN 13432 is the European standard that defines when packaging (and all its components) can be described as “compostable” in industrial composting conditions. To meet the standard, a material must:

  • Biodegrade by at least 90% within six months under controlled industrial composting conditions (around 58°C, with regulated moisture and oxygen levels).
  • Disintegrate so that no visible fragments remain after 12 weeks.
  • Leave no harmful residues, including no microplastics, heavy metals, or ecotoxic effects.

For adhesives, EN 13432 certification confirms that the adhesive will break down at the same rate and under the same conditions as other certified compostable materials in industrial facilities. This ensures it will not compromise the compostability of the overall packaging.

It’s important to note that EN 13432 applies to industrial composting, not home composting, where lower and more variable temperatures can slow or prevent breakdown. It also doesn’t automatically guarantee compatibility with every other compostable material, so testing the full packaging system is essential for verified claims.

Q4: Is there a threshold for adhesives under EN 13432?

Yes. If adhesives make up more than 1% of the total dry weight of the pack, they must be compostable themselves.

Even below that, all non-compostable components combined cannot exceed 5%.

Q5: What’s changing by mid-2027?

Certain packaging formats, such as tea bags, fruit stickers, and very lightweight carrier bags, must be compostable in industrial composting facilities by mid-2027.

Adhesives used in these products will need to be proven compostable to maintain compliance.

Q6: Are adhesives included in recyclability-at-scale rules?

From 2035, packaging must be recyclable at scale. Meaning it’s collected, sorted, and processed in real-world recycling systems.

Adhesives that contaminate recovered fibres or disrupt processing will count against recyclability scoring.

Q7: How can biodegradable hot melts help meet PPWR goals?

Biodegradable hot melt adhesives, like Tecbond 214B, are certified to EN 13432 and ASTM D6400.

They maintain bond strength and speed in production while ensuring adhesives won’t block composting or undermine recyclability claims.

Q8: What are the risks of not acting now?

Delaying action risks having to redesign packaging under time pressure, paying higher compliance costs, or losing market access in the EU.

Early adoption of compliant adhesives means smoother transitions and stronger sustainability credentials.

Q9: What’s the first step for brands?

Audit your current packaging, including adhesives, against PPWR requirements.

Request certifications and test data from suppliers and ensure adhesive specs are compatible with both recyclability and compostability targets.

Power Adhesives acts as a technical partner, working closely with you to understand your packaging goals and regulatory obligations. We’ll help identify the adhesive solutions that best fit your pack design, production process, and sustainability targets.

From PPWR-compliant biodegradable hot melts to detailed testing data and documentation, we provide the expertise and evidence you need to make confident, compliant choices.

Bulk Adhesives, Big Results: The ideal precision bonding solution for digital cutters

Digital cutters offer unparalleled precision, flexibility and efficiency for converters, and can work with a wider range of materials than some traditional die cutting methods. However, adhesive selection remains a critical challenge. Choosing the wrong adhesive can lead to production slowdowns, poor bonding and unnecessary material waste.

At Power Adhesives, we are proud to offer the solution to this problem. Our range of bulk hot melt adhesives ensures converters can access the right adhesive for their requirements, helping them optimise their processes and make the most of their digital cutting technology.

Adhesive selection matters

When it comes to choosing the right adhesive for digital cutting, converters face several challenges:

Material compatibility

Digital cutters often work with a diverse range of substrates, from cardboard and corrugated board to heat sensitive substrates like foam or expanded polystyrene. Adhesives need to bond effectively with these materials, which may differ markedly in terms of surface energy, flexibility or thickness, and the wrong adhesive can result in weak bonds or damage to the material.

Adhesive performance

Ensuring strong adhesion while maintaining flexibility is critical, particularly for high-flex substrates like shrink films and squeeze tubes. Issues such as ink cracking or adhesive failure on these materials may require specialised adhesives. Additionally, environmental factors such as temperature and humidity can significantly impact adhesive performance. For instance, adhesives may fail to bond effectively in cold storage conditions or may degrade under high humidity.

Sustainability requirements

Many converters face growing pressure to use eco-conscious adhesives that support recyclability, reduce VOC emissions and help to minimise waste. This can add additional complexity in adhesive selection, as performance must be balanced against sustainability targets.

Production efficiency

Adhesives need to cure quickly to maintain the high production speeds used by digital cutters. Adhesives that take too long to set can slow down production lines, while those that set too quickly may not allow for proper alignment or repositioning.

Bulk hot melt adhesives are the ideal solution

Addressing these concerns requires close collaboration between adhesive manufacturers, equipment suppliers and end users to develop tailored solutions that meet technical and operational demands.

Our bulk hot melt adhesives are specifically designed to address these challenges, making them the ideal precision bonding solution for packaging converters using digital cutters. These adhesives offer unmatched versatility, bonding effectively with a wide range of substrates, including both porous and non-porous materials. Whether you’re working with corrugated board or delicate foam, Power Adhesives has a formulation tailored to your needs.

With a wide selection of bio-based and biodegradable solutions, Power Adhesives’ packaging hot melts enhance packaging and print operations, offering high efficiency, secure bonds and fast setting speeds. This allows converters to maintain high production speeds without sacrificing bond strength or precision.

The thermoplastic nature of these adhesives ensures consistent performance across varying environmental conditions, providing reliable bonds even in extreme temperatures or high-humidity environments. Their 100% solid formulations mean there’s minimal shrinkage during cooling, ensuring optimal coverage with less material. This not only reduces waste but also lowers overall costs.

As a result, the Tecbond bulk adhesives range ensures a suitable solution for every requirement, ensuring converters can access the tools they need to maximise digital cutting equipment.

Power Adhesives, a global leader in hot melt adhesive systems, is celebrating 50 years of innovation in which it has developed adhesive solutions for a range of markets and pushed boundaries to develop from an importer and distributor to become a pioneering manufacturer.

Since its founding in 1974 as an importer and supplier, Power Adhesives has been at the forefront of adhesive technology. In 1981 it transitioned to being a manufacturer, establishing its own plant and producing its own glue guns and adhesives. Over the last five decades, the company has continuously delivered high-performance, reliable solutions for its customers and, due to its success, in 2013 expanded production capacity by 60% to meet growing global demand. In 2022, the business was purchased by long term investment company Longacre Group.

Brendan Colgan, Chief Executive Officer of Power Adhesives, reflects on the company’s journey: “Reaching our 50th anniversary is not just a celebration of what we’ve achieved, but a reaffirmation of our dedication to push the boundaries of innovation to help build a sustainable future. Our extensive knowledge accumulated over the last 50 years enables us to be pioneers in new adhesive technology and provide industry-specialist advice for commercial bonding operations using hot melt adhesives.”

Most recently, Power Adhesives has demonstrated its commitment to advancing adhesive technology with the launch of Tecbond 214B, the world’s first fully certified biodegradable shaped hot melt adhesive. Formulated using 45% bio-based materials, Tecbond 214B breaks down after use with no harmful effects to nature, providing a critical solution for industries striving to reduce their environmental footprint.

Using the same data-driven R&D expertise and approach that drove the success of Tecbond 214B, Power Adhesives has also made significant advancements in adhesive solutions for composites manufacturing, including its Vactac Advanced Solution, developed for demanding composite manufacturing applications such as wind power and marine industries.

Colgan added: “The launch of Tecbond 214B is a pivotal moment in our journey, helping to empower industries and businesses to achieve their environmental goals without sacrificing the high performance they rely on. This same commitment to innovation and precision underpins the advancements we’ve made with Vactac, and we look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of adhesive technology in 2025 and beyond, including expanding our Tecbond biodegradable adhesives into bulk systems.”

In its 50th year, Power Adhesives remains committed to advancing hot melt adhesive technology and being sustainable, as demonstrated by its ISO9001:2015, ISO14001:2021 and ISO45001:2018 certifications, highlighting its strides towards greater environmental sustainability, workplace safety, and top-quality products. These certifications played a significant role in Power Adhesives earning an EcoVadis Silver Award, recognising its commitment to sustainability and ethical practices.
