30 Years of Tecbond Sprayable Hot Melts

It’s been over 30 years since Power Adhesives first launched the now tried and trusted Tecbond sprayable hot melt system. It has become synonymous with the business, with the company becoming the first to pioneer the idea of sprayable adhesives in a hand-held hot melt tool, without the need of a bulk tank.

To celebrate this milestone, we’re taking a look back at the history of the Tecbond spray system and how it has become a hugely important part of manufacturing processes across many industries.

A Brief History of Tecbond Spray

The Tecbond spray system differs from many other sprayable hot melt systems because it does not require a bulk tank or lots of additional electronic components to function.

As a specialist in shaped hot melt adhesives, Power Adhesives recognised a gap in the market for industries that needed a portable spray adhesive system that was VOC-free and more eco-conscious than the alternatives available, primarily solvent-based spray can adhesives.

However, its creation was not without challenges. Many early attempts at a sprayable hot melt were unsuccessful because, in solid form, the adhesive was far too soft. This caused issues when feeding the glue through the tool, as its malleability led to glue backup and melt back.

In the early 1990s, new polymers were developed that allowed for the formulation of hot melts that were less malleable in solid form, while still retaining sufficient open time and bonding capability once sprayed. Once this adhesive was perfected, the company created a unique version of its 4000 Series tool: the 4200, which adapted the output nozzle and used a compressed air feed to generate the spray-like pattern produced by bulk tank systems.

Alongside its user safety benefits, the release of this system also allowed smaller manufacturers to work with a sprayable hot melt system, as the setup was far cheaper than the existing bulk systems on the market.

Fast forward 30 years, and the technology has come a long way. The Tecbond spray range currently includes five different formulations for a variety of applications, along with two separate tools to suit different budgets and output requirements.

How the system works

The Tecbond spray range uses compressed air to create its unique spray/swirl pattern. Much like a traditional glue gun, the tool contains a high-powered heating mechanism that, once up to temperature, can melt more than 4 kg of adhesive per hour.

Once the hot melt is loaded into the tool, compressed air forces the feed mechanism down, pushing the glue slugs into the heating chamber. Once molten, the adhesive is forced to the nozzle in much the same way as a standard bead tool.

However, Tec spray tools have specially designed nozzles with fluted holes around the outside of the central opening from which the glue is dispensed. These fluted nozzles direct the remaining compressed air in a circular motion around the central nozzle, causing the extruded hot melt to swirl. This creates the final spiral pattern.

The pattern can be adjusted using the vortex adjustment screw on the back of the tool. This allows more air to pass through the flutes, causing the adhesive to spread further across the substrate, resulting in a much finer pattern.

The output quantity and pattern can also be changed by using a nozzle with a wider central orifice.

For more robust bonds, a more compact spiral pattern is recommended. For greater surface coverage, and for use on heat-sensitive materials, a wider, finer spiral is needed.

Industries That Have Adopted the Tecbond Spray System

One of the first industries to embrace this technology was the furniture industry. The greater portability of a handheld hot melt spray tool made it ideal for workers, as they could use the Tec glue gun in much the same way as the traditional solvent- and water-based solutions they were accustomed to.

With its ability to be used on heat-sensitive substrates, furniture manufacturers realised that it could be used across the entire build, from foam cushion bonding, fabric to foam bonds, and cushion to frame bonds.

Another benefit of hot melts in furniture production is their significantly faster setting speed, with zero risk of mould growth. Water-based adhesives can take several hours for the water to fully evaporate, and if any moisture remains, it can lead to mould growth in susceptible materials such as foam and fabric.

In recent years, vehicle manufacturers have adopted Tecbond spray technology for the health & safety advantages and substrate compatibility compared to the more commonly used solvent-based adhesives.

Because all Tecbond adhesives are VOC-free, workers do not require respiratory PPE when using them, and manufacturing facilities do not need air extraction or filtration equipment to operate safely. This allows businesses, especially start-ups, to significantly reduce equipment costs.

Tecbond spray adhesives also offer a much wider range of material compatibility than traditional alternatives. Manufacturers can replace two or three different adhesive systems with a single hot melt tool and one or two hot melt grades, streamlining the production process and, once again, reducing operational costs.

Power Adhesives launches lightweight & portable Tec 306 hot melt applicator

Power Adhesives has launched the Tec 306-12 – the upgraded replacement for the Tec 305 tool, designed to provide more flexibility and portability for users.

Based on the same reliable technology and build quality as its predecessor, the Tec 306 now features a removable cable for applications requiring more portability.

Utilising the industry-standard IEC C7 power cable, the tool can be detached mid-operation, enabling cordless use for a short period of time whilst the heater is still at operating temperature.

This allows users the option to work temporarily unconstrained by a power cable and to adapt the applicator to different bonding needs.

Alex Zulewski, Commercial Director at Power Adhesives commented: “We’re excited to upgrade our most compact, lightweight 12mm applicator with the added benefit of portability and easier storage. The Tec 306 provides all best features of the Tec 305 that users expect, but with even more flexibility and value.”

Much like the Tec 305, the Tec 306 has a compact footprint and slim-line design for intricate bonding applications, with a warm-up time of under five minutes, so there’s no waiting around for the adhesive to melt.

Designed with user comfort in mind, the Tec 306 includes an adjustable full-hand trigger to reduce strain during extended use, and interchangeable nozzles to adapt to different bonding needs.

The Tec 306 can be used for a range of applications, including packaging and print, electrical functions like potting and encapsulation, woodworking and wood repair, arts & crafts, floristry, and DIY.

For best results, use the Tec 306 with the full range of Tecbond 12mm glue sticks from Power Adhesives.

Tecbond Spray vs Spray Cans – Why you should make the switch

When manufacturers are looking for a bonding solution that gives a near-instant hold and offers larger surface coverage, their initial thoughts are to look for an aerosol spray solution. For years, these options have provided a convenient and, on the surface, cheap solution to their issue.

However, over the past few years, scrutiny has increased around these adhesives, due to their impact on the environment, and the hazards they pose to workers if not used correctly. As these concerns continue to grow, manufacturers are beginning to rethink what they actually need from a spray adhesive. Rather than prioritising convenience alone, there is a clear shift towards solutions that offer greater control, improved safety, and reduced environmental impact – without compromising on performance.

This is where sprayable hot melt systems, such as the Tecbond spray range, are changing the way people approach their bonding tasks.

The drawback of aerosol spray adhesives

  • Health and Safety Risks – Although there is a major focus on the respiratory problems inhaling solvents can cause, this isn’t the only health and safety issue around solvent-based adhesive systems. Many people can experience skin and eye irritation when exposed to airborne solvents. They’re also highly flammable, and can combust when exposed to direct sunlight or increased room temperatures, so careful control of storage and working environment is required.
  • Environmental Impact – The volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) present in solvents are a huge contributor to air pollution, with evidence of both water contamination and soil pollution in scenarios where solvent-based products aren’t disposed of correctly.
  • Cost Inefficiencies – Although the initial cost outlay seems minimal when assessed per can of adhesive, most jobs will take several cans of adhesive to complete, which soon adds up, along with the associated disposal costs. Alongside this, many solvent-based adhesives are colourless when applied, leading to overspray and waste product.
  • Inconsistent application – Coupled with the overspray, many spray cans will experience changes in pressure and output dependant on how the adhesive is applied. This can lead to heavy patches and uneven coatings.

What are manufacturers looking for in an alternative?

The three main components most manufacturers are now looking for in an adhesive system are safety, speed, and bond strength. A solvent/VOC free solution is a great thing, but it’s difficult to adopt a different technology if it doesn’t meet the manufacturers time requirements, or bond the same substrates that a current or established solution does.

Moreover, if a solution can speed up processes, while providing the same bonding performance, it’s easier to integrate into the production cycle.

The Tecbond Spray System

Part of the Power Adhesives range of solutions, the Tecbond spray system utilises compressed air, in conjunction with hot melt technology to provide a more user-friendly, eco-conscious and faster alternative to spray cans.

Unlike a regular hot melt tool that dispenses adhesive in a bead, Tec spray tools such as the Tec 6300 and Tec 7300 create a swirl-like pattern that offers greater surface coverage and visibility, without minimising bonding quality.

The system is already widely used in the product assembly and construction industry, where it can be found as a component in mattresses, cushioned furniture, mobility equipment and vehicle interiors to name a few. In recent years, the system has been trialled in the high-pressure laminate industry when adding outer layers to worktops and indoor furnishings.

The key advantages over aerosols

  1. Safer for operators

As hot melts are 100% solid material and are VOC-free, there’s are minimal health & safety risks involved. The lack of harmful propellants means operators do not need any respiratory PPE when using the system, nor do businesses need any air extraction equipment to keep their workers safe.

  1. More environmentally responsible

Outside of user safety, the absence of VOCs means there’s no air pollution created from the bonding process. Additionally, there is no waste product either, so there’s a much lower risk of any soil or water pollution that’s usually associated with spray can disposal.

  1. Cost-Effectiveness

Unlike their solvent-based counterparts, Tecbond hot melts are visible when sprayed, allowing users to accurately control not only the amount of adhesive they’re applying, but where they’re applying it. This greatly reduces overspray and keeps the cost-per-bond down. Despite the initial outlay for equipment and setup, the long-term cost saving when comparing hot melt slugs to aerosol cans is significant.

  1. Overall Performance

Despite using less adhesive, Tecbond hot melts will match and even outperform the best solvent-based spray adhesives on almost any common building material. Not only this, but their speed of set is what really sets hot melts apart from other adhesives, particularly solvent-based types that require a “flashing-off” period of several hours. In comparison, Tecbond hot melts will provide a near-instant bond and set within minutes.

The next step in performance bonding

Aerosol spray adhesives are slowly becoming an outdated solution. Although convenient and easy to just grab-and-go, the issues around their safety and waste can not be overlooked by modern manufacturing businesses.

The Tecbond spray system is more than just another alternative, it’s the next step in a more eco-conscious look at bonding. By eliminating the need for propellants, reducing waste, and giving operators greater control, they address many of the long-standing challenges associated with traditional spray cans—without sacrificing performance.

Tecbond Adhesives in Commercial Vehicle Builds & Conversions

At a time where there is ever-increasing scrutiny around the use of hazardous materials, and greater demand on speed and efficiency in production industries, many manufacturers are turning to hot melt adhesives as the answer.

In the vehicle construction and professional modification industries specifically, manufacturers are looking for new technologies which can handle demanding applications in vehicle construction, without compromising on strength and build-time.

Hot melt adhesives are a strong option because they are fast to apply, set quickly, and avoid the curing delays and solvent issues associated with many liquid adhesives.

Why hot melts work so well in this environment

Compared to water and solvent-based adhesive systems, hot melt adhesives dramatically cut back on waiting times and safety concerns, ultimately contributing to smoother processes and increased production speeds.

As hot melts cool and solidify to form bonds, as opposed to water or solvent evaporation, they can form a solid join within minutes of compression. In many cases, bonds formed with water or solvent-based adhesives are not fully secure until 24 or even 48 hours after compression. The faster bonding speed of hot melts allows completed parts to be moved through the production line almost immediately, without the worry of bond failure.

Hot melts are also non-toxic and VOC-free, negating the need for any respiratory PPE or air extraction equipment in manufacturing facilities. As legislation on the use of hazardous materials in workplaces becomes more stringent, adopting a VOC-free technology such as hot melts can prevent businesses from incurring any fines or legal action in the future.

Some of the other benefits include the diversity of materials hot melts can bond, and their ability to be used as a gap-filler in certain circumstances.

Common uses for hot melts in the automotive industry

Due to their reliability and varied substrate compatibility, hot melts are commonly used for:

  • Interior trim attachments (door panels, edging, dashboard componentry, finishing trims etc)
  • Cable & Conduit tracking (wire management and bundle routing where applicable)
  • Insulation or acoustic materials
  • Light-duty fixture bonding (non-structural brackets, spacers, protective elements)
  • Temporary positioning (instant hold capabilities before a mechanical fastening)
  • Panel and lining assembly (in fit-out systems)

It’s worth noting that hot melts are ideal for any bonds that are classed as “non-structural”. Structural bonds can be temporarily secured using hot melts, but should always be properly secured with a high-strength structural adhesive or mechanical fastener.

Tecbond Hot Melts – The next step in hot melt bonding for commercial vehicles

What sets Tecbond hot melts apart from other hot melts, are their versatility and options beyond of traditional stick or bulk formats. Many Tecbond formulations are available in 43mm slug format for demanding applications where high-output is essential. Alongside this, some 43mm adhesives can be used in conjunction with the Tec spray applicators, creating a more user-friendly and cost-effective alternative to aerosol adhesives. Detailed below are some of the substrates and applications Tecbond hot melts are commonly used for.

Plastic Bonding

A common finishing material in the automotive industry, versatile plastics (such as polypropylene and polyethylene), have proven very challenging to bond due to their low surface tension, which makes it difficult for any chemical bonding to take place (for more information on physical and chemical bonding, check out our blog on the two types of bonding).

Tecbond 268 is a specialist plastic bonding adhesive, specifically designed to bond these difficult plastics, alongside other “shiny” substrates with low surface tension. For this reason, Tecbond 268 has become the staple choice for many manufacturers in the refrigerated vehicle industry, as it excels at bonding the polypropylene covering over the insulation panels used to keep the vehicle cool. The formulation has also been used to fix dashboard pieces, and decorative wall panelling in custom fit-outs.

Fabric coverings & linings

Another popular use for Tecbond hot melts is the bonding of fabrics to a wide range of substrates, including heat-sensitive materials such as foam.

The unique application method for Tecbond sprayable hot melts mean they can be applied to heat-sensitive materials without causing damage, but still provide a strong, near instant tack and reliable final bond. With many manufacturers being forced to move away from solvent-based adhesives, and the potential mould risk posed by water-based adhesives, Tecbond sprayable hot melts have already been adopted in the bonding of:

  • Roof liners
  • Seat manufacture (cushion bonding and fabric to cushion bonding)
  • Floor coverings

Insulation Panelling

Many UK-based refrigerated vehicle manufacturers have already switched over to Tecbond sprayable adhesives for their insulation bonding. Many other adhesives either an open time that is too short, meaning the adhesive cures or sets before the bond is made, or the bonding time is too long, requiring constant compression over a period of hours.

Tecbond sprayable hot melts, on the other hand, have the open time required for large panel bonding, with the high initial tack to hold the panel in place without extended compression periods.

Hot melt adhesives can dramatically improve speed and consistency in commercial vehicle construction and modification. Tecbond plastic bonding adhesives help tackle the reality of plastic-heavy interiors and trims, while Tecbond sprayable hot melts are ideal when coverage and substrate integrity are the priorities on large-area bonding tasks.

If you want a more robust, production-friendly bonding process, the best next step is to map your most common substrates and assemblies—then match the Tecbond grade and application method (bead vs spray) to each one.

Get PPWR ready with Tecbond 902B-PL

With the spotlight firmly on the life cycle of product packaging and transportation packaging, it is more important than ever that businesses start looking at how they can make sure their own packaging meets the upcoming specifications to avoid being sanctioned.

So what is PPWR?

PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is a new law that aims to reduce packaging waste within the EU. The main point of the initiative is that from 2030, all packaging (both product packaging and transport packaging) must be designed for recycling.

Under this law, any component used in a product’s packaging will need to be proven to be either recyclable or compostable. This includes adhesives. Even if the adhesive makes up only a small part of the packaging, can cause contamination in recycling streams and significantly weaken recyclability claims.

Prior to this, the first set of PPWR regulations come into effect from mid-2027, stating that certain packaging formats like fruit stickers and tea bags must be compostable in industrial composting facilities.

This has the potential to be a major problem in the label and envelope manufacturing industries. Pressure-sensitive adhesives are an integral part of their design and under this new law, normal options would result in a non-conformity.

Failure to comply with PPWR regulations could result in sanctions ranging from fines to refusal of product acceptance when shipping to other countries. To find out more about PPWR, check out our PPWR Q&A.

The biodegradable solution

Earlier this year, we expanded our range of biodegradable hot melts for the packaging industry. One of these new additions was Tecbond 902B-PL, a pressure-sensitive adhesive with a low viscosity aimed at manufacturers running high-speed production lines that need a multi-purpose biodegradable alternative.

Its low viscosity, coupled with high tack, means that smaller amounts of adhesive can be applied, without the risk of creep or adhesive failure, cutting down on production costs. Alongside this, Tecbond 902B-PL has good heat resistance when compared to other PSAs, so is suitable for use in warmer environments.

The formulation is also indirect food contact approved, making it ideal for not only food packaging, but also labelling on certain fruits, mainly those with a wax covering or waxy exterior.

Most notably, Tecbond 902B-PL, along with every other Tecbond biodegradable grade, is EN13432 compliant, meaning it classed as “compostable” in industrial composting conditions. To meet the standard, the adhesive needs to biodegrade by at least 90% within six months under these conditions, and disintegrate to a point no there are no visible fragments after 12 weeks. All of this means that when the used packaging enters the correct waste streams, the adhesive will break down at the same rate and under the same conditions as other certified compostable materials in industrial facilities.

Tecond 902B-PL has also achieved CHIRA assessment approval, confirming that it is benign within paper recycling streams and has no adverse effects on the pulping or recovery process.

How it works

The Tecbond biodegradable range has been formulated to begin biodegrading in naturally occurring environmental conditions, requiring only UV light, oxygen and heat to begin the biodegradation process. These elements initiate the breakdown of long-chain polymers and from this point onwards, only the continued presence of oxygen is needed to continue the breakdown.

After the long-chain polymers have been broken down, the matter is able to be consumed by micro-organisms in the same way natural waste is, eventually leaving behind non-harmful and non-impactful products, with no microplastics.

With the first set of PPWR regulations coming into effect in mid-2027, it’s more important than ever that manufacturers both understand and explore what options they have for making their packaging fully recyclable or compostable.

Tecbond biodegradable adhesives provide peace of mind by ensuring no compromises in bond strength, while adhering to upcoming legislations so you don’t incur any penalties or loss of business.

How hot melts have changed the game in the furniture production industry

Sprayable hot melts have been around for nearly 20 years, and in that time, they’ve established themselves as a key component in the manufacture of many everyday products.

In the furniture industry for example, as production demands have increased and designs have evolved, manufacturers have turned to these advanced adhesive technologies to improve efficiency, reduce waste and enhance product quality. From foam bonding to upholstery fixing, Tecbond sprayable hot melts play a vital role in every stage of production.

In this blog, we’ll explore some of the key applications where Tecbond sprayable hot melts have made a significant difference.

Foam-to-Foam bonding

In any piece of furniture that includes cushioning, there will be some form of high-density foam or foam structure designed to provide comfort and support, with enough integrity to hold its shape after a period of use.

These foam pieces can be difficult to bond due to their porous makeup and resistance to compression. In many circumstances, manufacturers would have used water-based adhesives due to the very strong bonds they deliver once fully cured. However, water-based adhesives introduce some unwanted risks that are difficult to tackle. Alongside their very long curing time, if the water doesn’t evaporate properly, there’s a risk of mould growth which can then spread to other parts of the furniture.

Tecbond hot melts on the other hand are not only compromised of 100% solid content, with no evaporation or curing taking place, but they also have a high instant tack and fast setting speeds. Once an initial bond is made, it takes only a few minutes for the bond to be strong enough to enable movement through the production line, speeding up the overall production process.

Foam-to-Structure bonding

Following foam-to-foam bonding, many manufacturers will use the same hot melts to bond the finished cushioning to the structural component that makes up the frame of the furniture. This includes seat bottoms, back supports, and even backing boards for decorative pieces or acoustic paneling.

As with the foam-to-foam bonds, Tecbond spray adhesive will form a final bond much faster than a water or solvent-based alternative. Using the same adhesive for all stages of the process also cuts down on production costs and materials, without compromising on performance.

Alongside wood, Tecbond spray adhesives will also effectively bond foam pieces to almost any building material including metal and most plastics (including polypropylene and polyethylene).

Upholstery Fabrics

Due to their excellent coverage and zero risk of mould growth, hot melts continue to be a common alternative for bonding upholstery fabrics to the finished foam pieces. They also act as a temporary bond on wooden framing prior to stapling or pinning.

Their high initial tack means that manufacturers can rely on a strong temporary bond while they prepare to finish securing the fabric with the necessary fastener.

Our sprayable hot melts have been used to bond fabrics in sofas, armchairs, office seating, and even wheelchairs.

Decorative Laminates

Outside of traditional veneer coverings, a lot of furniture manufacturers have turned to high pressure laminates (HPLs) to provide an easier and more robust alternative for decorative surface covering over unsightly wood substrates such as MDF, particleboard and plywood.

Primarily bonded with a solvent-based contact adhesive, this method isn’t cost-effective as the bonding process requires both surfaces to be covered to achieve a strong bond. With solvent-based adhesives being more than 60% solvent in most cases, the low initial cost of the adhesive is negated by frequency of purchase.

Alongside this, there is a significant disposal cost that comes with the empty canisters. As they contain traces of hazardous material, they require special disposal methods to avoid air pollution and human inhalation, which comes at a cost.

Tecbond spray adhesives are the ideal alternative thanks to their VOC-free composition and high tack, which reduces the amount of adhesive needed to form a strong bond. In many circumstances, users would apply the hot melt to the wooden surface only and then apply the HPL. As 100% of the product is used in the application process, there’s no waste product and no associated disposal costs.

The Overarching Benefits

Tecbond sprayable hot melts offer a more cost-effective, user-friendly and agile alternative to other commonly used products on the market.

Non-toxic and easy to handle they can be used without the need for respiratory PPE or air extraction equipment in factories, while their rapid setting speeds when compared to solvent and water-based options mean products move through the production line faster, increasing production efficiency.

Power Adhesives launches cost-effective and reliable carton closing hot melt adhesive

Power Adhesives has added a brand-new packaging grade to its Tecbond range of hot melts, engineered to help businesses reduce their costs without compromising on performance or speed.

Tecbond 114 has been developed for use on uncoated cardboard, making it ideal for carton closing, tray assembly and for use with packaging inserts.

Developed by Power Adhesives based on customer feedback, cost-effective Tecbond 114 enables businesses to reduce the cost per carton closure. Its fast setting speed and strong initial bond help manufacturers to reduce adhesive usage per box, while increasing production efficiency.

Available in 12mm, 15mm and 43mm shaped formats, Tecbond 114 delivers best results when used with the Tec range of hot melt applicators.

Alex Zulewski, Commercial Director commented: “Tecbond 114 is a great addition to our range of hot melts for packaging. As a customer-focused manufacturer, we’ve listened to the market and created a great cost-effective option, while still delivering strength and performance.

“We’re proud to be able to offer such a comprehensive range that caters for all customers, including good quality products that are keenly priced for the packaging market, next to cutting edge biodegradable hot melts for packaging.”

Power Adhesives recently expanded its biodegradable range of hot melts, introducing three new adhesives aimed primarily at packaging. Tecbond 902B-PL, Tecbond 351B-PR and Tecbond 351B-PR were launched in January, which sit alongside original biodegradable formulations Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR.

All Tecbond biodegradable grades comply with EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, ensuring they biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions without leaving microplastics or harmful residues. The full range of grades has also achieved CHIRA assessment approval, confirming that they are benign within paper recycling streams and have no adverse effects on the pulping or recovery process.

All products are suitable for use in high-speed packaging environments and precision manufacturing, offering reliable adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.

Tecbond 114 is the latest hot melt to be added to the Tecbond packaging range, offering customers a comprehensive choice of adhesives to suit their needs.
