Next up in our monthly highlight of the Power Adhesives Commercial team, we have Joanna Mallinson, our Commercial Operations Manager.

Joanna joined Power Adhesives in 2024 as the Sales Support Manager, and transitioned in her current role at the start of 2026.

In this interview, Joanna discusses her background prior to joining Power Adhesives, her journey so far within the company, and where she sees the business in the coming months and years.

1. How did your journey with Power Adhesives begin?

My journey with Power Adhesives began when my role at my previous company became permanently remote. While I appreciated the flexibility, I realised how much I missed the day-to-day interaction and being part of a team. When I came across a Sales Support Manager role at Power Adhesives, it immediately stood out as a great fit and a company with a strong culture. After learning more about the role and the business, I knew I had to apply – and it’s been a positive step in my career.

2. What made you choose to stay with the company?

No two days are ever the same — there are always new challenges to take on, which keeps the role interesting and rewarding. The people I work with are great, and there’s a strong culture of teamwork and support that makes coming to work genuinely enjoyable.

3. How has your role evolved over the years?

When I joined Power Adhesives in 2024, I started as the Sales Support Manager, focusing on supporting the sales team and ensuring day-to-day operations ran smoothly. Since then, my role has evolved significantly, and I was recently promoted to Commercial Operations Manager. In this role I oversee the company’s commercial and operational functions, bridging sales, finance and operations, while driving performance, improving processes, and supporting strategic growth initiatives.

5. What’s one innovation or project you’ve worked on that you’re most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of leading the implementation of our new quotation module and CRM system, which streamlined processes and improved efficiency for the sales team. I also played a key role in enhancing the company’s export compliance, ensuring we meet all regulatory requirements while supporting our growth.

6. How does Power Adhesives stay ahead in the industry?

We stay ahead by putting our customers at the heart of everything we do. We listen, adapt quickly, and continually innovate to deliver reliable, high-quality solutions that solve real-world challenges. 7. How have you seen technology or processes change since you started?

There has been a strong shift towards using technology and more structured processes to better understand and meet customer needs. Improved access to, and management of customer information has also supported tighter compliance, helping us deliver a more consistent and reliable service while building stronger, more trusted relationships with our customers.

8. What do you enjoy most about working with your team?

The collaboration and trust within the team is what I enjoy most. Everyone is supportive, takes ownership, and is genuinely committed to doing their best. There’s a real sense of shared purpose, which makes working together both productive and rewarding.

9. Are there any mentors or colleagues who have had a big impact on your career?

A previous manager at a former employer had a big impact on my career by genuinely investing in my development. They supported me through a 12-month leadership mentoring program, a management diploma, and a range of different courses, all of which were invaluable. That guidance and belief in me helped shape my approach to leadership and continues to influence how I work today.

I see Power Adhesives continuing to grow as an industry leader through innovation, strong customer partnerships, and investment in our people. Power Adhesives launches cost-effective and reliable carton closing hot melt adhesive

Power Adhesives has added a brand-new packaging grade to its Tecbond range of hot melts, engineered to help businesses reduce their costs without compromising on performance or speed.

Tecbond 114 has been developed for use on uncoated cardboard, making it ideal for carton closing, tray assembly and for use with packaging inserts.

Developed by Power Adhesives based on customer feedback, cost-effective Tecbond 114 enables businesses to reduce the cost per carton closure. Its fast setting speed and strong initial bond help manufacturers to reduce adhesive usage per box, while increasing production efficiency.

Available in 12mm, 15mm and 43mm shaped formats, Tecbond 114 delivers best results when used with the Tec range of hot melt applicators.

Power Adhesives recently expanded its biodegradable range of hot melts, introducing three new adhesives aimed primarily at packaging. Tecbond 902B-PL, Tecbond 351B-PR and Tecbond 351B-PR were launched in January, which sit alongside original biodegradable formulations Tecbond 214B and Tecbond 110B-PR.

All Tecbond biodegradable grades comply with EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, ensuring they biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions without leaving microplastics or harmful residues. The full range of grades has also achieved CHIRA assessment approval, confirming that they are benign within paper recycling streams and have no adverse effects on the pulping or recovery process.

All products are suitable for use in high-speed packaging environments and precision manufacturing, offering reliable adhesion to a wide variety of substrates.

Tecbond 114 is the latest hot melt to be added to the Tecbond packaging range, offering customers a comprehensive choice of adhesives to suit their needs.

PPWR & Biodegradable Adhesives – A comprehensive Q&A

Q1: What is the PPWR and why does it matter for adhesives?

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will replace the current Packaging Directive and set binding, harmonised rules across all Member States. From 2030, all packaging must be designed for recycling.

This includes every component, right down to the adhesive. Using a non-compliant adhesive can compromise recyclability or compostability claims, risking market access, fines, or reputational damage.

Q2: Can adhesives really stop my packaging from being recyclable or compostable?

Yes. Even if the main substrate is recyclable or compostable, incompatible adhesives can cause contamination in recycling streams, clog sorting and pulping equipment, or prevent composting certification.

A small percentage of non-compliant adhesive can invalidate the whole claim.

Q3: What does EN 13432 certification mean for adhesives?

EN 13432 is the European standard that defines when packaging (and all its components) can be described as “compostable” in industrial composting conditions. To meet the standard, a material must:

  • Biodegrade by at least 90% within six months under controlled industrial composting conditions (around 58°C, with regulated moisture and oxygen levels).
  • Disintegrate so that no visible fragments remain after 12 weeks.
  • Leave no harmful residues, including no microplastics, heavy metals, or ecotoxic effects.

For adhesives, EN 13432 certification confirms that the adhesive will break down at the same rate and under the same conditions as other certified compostable materials in industrial facilities. This ensures it will not compromise the compostability of the overall packaging.

It’s important to note that EN 13432 applies to industrial composting, not home composting, where lower and more variable temperatures can slow or prevent breakdown. It also doesn’t automatically guarantee compatibility with every other compostable material, so testing the full packaging system is essential for verified claims.

Q4: Is there a threshold for adhesives under EN 13432?

Yes. If adhesives make up more than 1% of the total dry weight of the pack, they must be compostable themselves.

Even below that, all non-compostable components combined cannot exceed 5%.

Q5: What’s changing by mid-2027?

Certain packaging formats, such as tea bags, fruit stickers, and very lightweight carrier bags, must be compostable in industrial composting facilities by mid-2027.

Adhesives used in these products will need to be proven compostable to maintain compliance.

Q6: Are adhesives included in recyclability-at-scale rules?

From 2035, packaging must be recyclable at scale. Meaning it’s collected, sorted, and processed in real-world recycling systems.

Adhesives that contaminate recovered fibres or disrupt processing will count against recyclability scoring.

At the start of 2026, we brought together our sales, marketing and technical teams together to create a full Commercial team, allowing us to enhance the way we work alongside our distributors to ensure they have everything they need to go to market.

In this interview, Alex reflects on his career journey to date and shares how Power Adhesives has continued to go from strength to strength during his time with the company.

1. How did your journey with Power Adhesives begin?

Completely by accident. I was finishing a project with a company I was doing consultancy work for when a recruiter contacted me about a Product Management role at an adhesives company in Basildon. Curiosity led me to the interview, but it was the tour of the facility—and meeting the staff, many of whom had an average tenure of around 15 years—that really sold it to me. It was immediately clear this was a company people genuinely wanted to stay with.

2. What made you choose to stay with the company for so long?

No two days are ever the same. The business continually presents new technical and personal challenges, which suits both my personality and the evolving roles I’ve held over the years.

3. How has your role evolved over the years?

I joined as Product Manager and, within my first year, absorbed responsibility for the Technical and Regulatory Compliance functions. That led to my appointment as Commercial Manager, and following a change in CEO and a renewed strategic growth focus, I was appointed Commercial Director.

4. How would you describe the company culture in three words?

Innovative, collaborative, and accountable.

Developing and successfully taking to market the world’s first biodegradable hot melt adhesives.

6. How does Power Adhesives stay ahead in the industry?

We deliberately avoid competing in the commodity consumables space, which is largely dominated by Eastern European or Far East–sourced products and often becomes a race to the bottom. Instead, we focus on the high-technical end of the market—constantly exploring how far hot melt technology can be pushed into applications traditionally dominated by other adhesive types.

7. How have you seen technology or processes change since you started?

There has been a significant shift toward smarter, more efficient manufacturing and greater regulatory oversight. Digitisation has improved traceability, testing, and product development speed, while customer expectations have moved firmly toward sustainability, performance validation, and application-specific solutions rather than off-the-shelf products.

The openness and willingness to challenge ideas constructively. There’s a strong sense of shared ownership here—people genuinely care about the outcome, not just their individual roles. That collaborative mindset makes problem-solving faster, better, and far more rewarding.

9. Are there any mentors or colleagues who have had a big impact on your career?

Early in my career at Maximuscle, my boss Roger Harris was a huge influence. He put me front and centre in meetings, trusted me with responsibility early on, and gave me my first real opportunity in product development. I learned an enormous amount from his leadership style.

I see Power Adhesives continuing to grow as a specialist, innovation-led manufacturer with sustainability at its core. Power Adhesives expands world’s first certified biodegradable range with new grades

Power Adhesives has announced a major expansion of its Tecbond biodegradable hot melt adhesive range, introducing three new grades that strengthen its leadership in sustainable bonding solutions for packaging and beyond.

The new products, Tecbond 902B-PL, 351B-PR, and 355B-PR, join the pioneering Tecbond 214B and 110B-PR, the world’s first fully certified biodegradable hot melt adhesives. Together, they create a comprehensive portfolio of adhesives designed to meet the demands of both sustainability and performance.

All Tecbond biodegradable grades comply with EN 13432 and ASTM D6400, ensuring they biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions without leaving microplastics or harmful residues. The full range of grades has also achieved CHIRA assessment approval, confirming that they are benign within paper recycling streams and have no adverse effects on the pulping or recovery process.

Each grade has been formulated for specific applications:

  • Tecbond 902B-PL – A bulk pillow adhesive containing 51% bio-based content, offering very high tack and permanent pressure sensitivity, ideal for labelling applications, and bonding paper, board, wood, and plastics.
  • Tecbond 351B-PR – A clean-running and odourless low-viscosity bulk adhesive formulated to reduce filter and nozzle blockages and improve process efficiency.
  • Tecbond 355B-PR – Designed for coated or laminated packaging, this bulk adhesive provides clean-running, low-temperature performance with a 10-second open time, making it ideal for freezer applications.

All products are suitable for use in high-speed packaging lines and precision manufacturing, offering reliable adhesion to a wide variety of substrates, including fiber-based, plastic, and coated materials.

With further grades currently in development, Power Adhesives continues to push the boundaries of biodegradable technology, helping converters and manufacturers future-proof their operations against tightening global sustainability regulations.

Choosing the right compostable adhesive for your packaging format

Choosing the right adhesive has always been about balancing performance, efficiency, and cost. Under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), there’s now a fourth dimension to consider and that is end-of-life alignment.

It is important to remember that not all biodegradable or compostable adhesives behave the same way and not every formulation suits every packaging type. To stay compliant and operationally efficient, converters must match adhesive chemistry to both substrate and intended recovery route.

Under EN 13432, all major components of compostable packaging must biodegrade and disintegrate under controlled industrial composting conditions. For adhesives, this means maintaining high performance during use and then safely breaking down into carbon dioxide, water, and humus when composted, with no microplastics or eco-toxicity.

What certification actually proves

The most important tests for compostable materials are independent certification standards. Two widely recognised standards are EN 13432 in Europe and ASTM D6400 in the United States.

EN 13432 sets laboratory criteria for industrial compostability. Key elements include biodegradation (a high proportion of the material must be converted to carbon dioxide under controlled composting conditions within a defined timeframe), disintegration (no visible fragments above a small size after a set period) and ecotoxicity (the compost produced must not inhibit plant growth). ASTM D6400 uses similar test principles tailored to US industrial composting conditions.

Certified biodegradable adhesives provide a traceable route to support those claims.

That said, using a certified compostable adhesive is only one part of a broader material strategy. Converters should ensure the entire pack design, including substrates, inks and coatings, aligns with the chosen end-of-life pathway and that collection and processing routes exist for industrial composting in the target market.
