How does Tecbond 214B break down?

UV light, oxygen and heat get things started

Together, these elements will initiate the breakdown of the long chain polymers within the adhesive. Once started, the process is irreversible.

Material is consumed by micro-organisms*

After the long-chain polymers have been broken down, they can be consumed by micro-organisms in the same way natural waste is.

Naturally occurring environmental conditions required

After initial exposure to UV light, oxygen and heat, the adhesive only requires the continued presence of oxygen to continue to breakdown.

Leaves behind no harmful products

The breakdown process leaves behind a mixture of non-harmful products, and no microplastics.

*Tecbond 214B is certified to ASTM D6400, EN13432, ASTM D6954 and ASTM D6866 standard.

Material is consumed by micro-organisms

After the long-chain polymers have been broken down, they can be consumed by micro-organisms in the same way natural waste is.

No special environmental conditions required

After initial exposure to UV light, oxygen and heat, the adhesive only requires the continued presence of oxygen to continue to breakdown.

Leaves behind natural products

The breakdown process leaves behind a mixture of carbon dioxide, water and humus (organic matter). These products will naturally be consumed by the environment over time.

Storage & Application of Tecbond 214B

Keep adhesive in original packaging, away from direct sunlight and store below 30°C until ready to use.
Only take the adhesive you require from the carton to avoid unnecessary exposure.
Load and apply adhesive as normal.
Any glue left in applicator should be purged after 24 hours. Simply feed a fresh stick into the applicator and dispense until you are confident the previous stick has been expelled.

Tec hot melt applicators

To get the most out of tecbond 214B, we recommend pairing it with our range of tec glue guns. As the only manufacturer that offers a full hot melt adhesive system, both adhesives and applicators are developed in partnership with each other to deliver optimal results and the best possible performance for the user.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tecbond 214B suitable for food contact?

The raw materials inTecbond 214B are indirect food contact approved, like Tecbond 214. FDA 175.105 food contact status remains unchanged.

Does Tecbond 214B require recycling or composting conditions to break down?

No, Tecbond 214B is biodegradable. It has the same attributes as Tecbond 214 with regards to composting and recycling. However, tecbond 214B is certified to ASTM D6400, which is the standard specification for solid material biodegradation by industrial composting, and EN13432, which is inclusive of ASTM, as well as soil and ecotoxicity and disintegration. It is also certified to ASTM D6954, the standard guide for exposing and testing plastics that degrade, and ASTM D6866, the standard test to determine biobased content.

How long will Tecbond 214B take to break down?
This depends on a number of variables, including application of the glue, exposure to oxygen, UV light, and heat. It is very difficult to give an approximation of the time required to biodegrade as this will vary in most instances. That said, in the presence of oxygen, it is an unstoppable and irreversible process.
Will the biodegradation process start as soon as the carton is opened?
As soon as the glue sticks are exposed to oxygen and UV light, the long-chain polymers will begin to break down. Users should be careful not to leave unused glue sticks exposed or out in the open.
Does Tecbond 214B have a shelf life?

We recommend not using Tecbond 214B beyond 24 months of the date of manufacture.
